In Cameroon and in other African countries, complex diseases are often recognized very late or not at all. Aissatou was lucky in that she was examined by the cardiologist Dr. Cabral Tantchou. The long-standing symptoms such as swollen legs, painful joints, headache, difficulty of breathing, and general weakness pointed to a heart problem. Dr. Tantchou diagnosed a mitral valve failure and a moderate aortic regurgitation. He urgently advised surgery.

Aissatou has another 5 siblings. The mother is a housewife and the father takes care of the family with his income as a chauffeur. The operation is possible in Yaoundé, in the outstation of the Cardiac Center Shisong. Now the financial hurdle has to be overcome. Compared to the western world, the costs are only 1/5, but for the father this would still be around 5 annual salaries.
