Mariana, Claudia's aunt, thought that her sick niece would recover quickly with a few medications. When dr. Cabral Tantchou at the Cardiac Center Shisong informed Mariana that Claudia has defects on several heart valves and surgery is essential, Mariana was shocked.

Claudia was still a baby when she lost her mother and father. She grew up with her aunt, who is herself widowed. With her small farm she takes care of Claudia and her own child. When Mariana learned what the lifesaving heart surgery would cost, she was in despair and thought she would lose Claudia. The Tertiary Sisters, however, encouraged her to have Claudia operated.
